What is Hometown Discoveries?

It's a scavenger hunt that engages DC students in their hometown.

Learning should not always take place inside of a classroom and these scavenger hunts allow students to learn while having fun in the area's great museums and at the National Zoo.

We meet one Saturday a month at a location that relates to the theme of the hunt. Students pay five dollars and pair up with another excited student because they know that if their team earns the most points they will split the jackpot!

Students are then given a clue sheet and a digital camera to document that they have solved each clue. They must take photographs or sometimes shoot short videos to explain a given concept or to solve a challenge.

Before they head out, teams choose a number which is the clue that they must solve first. Once the starting signal is given, teams rush off to solve all clues. These scavenger hunts last about two hours before students return to a designated spot to turn in their cameras for review.

Once teams finish they take a lunch break while Mr. Magnuson carefully scores each photo and video to see who is the winner. We then all return together for a brief overview of the answers and an awards ceremony.

After all of this, the only thing left to do is to vote on the funniest photo from the day's events. The photos are posted on this blog and all voting takes place here for one week after the scavenger hunt. The team with the winning photo will get to compete in the following month's Hometown Discoveries for free.

It's a great way to spend a Saturday in your hometown!
